About the masterpiece by Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Olga Tokarczuk, it has been said that once you read it, it stays with you for life. The novel has captivated readers with its philosophical crime-detective plot and the scale of its eternal themes. At its center is Janina – a resilient woman with a complex character, whose passion is exploring nature and astrology. She is a modern romantic with the zeal of Miss Marple.
In a remote Polish village, where the teacher Janina feels like an outsider, local hunters suddenly die one after another and in the strangest ways. All evidence points to a surprising conclusion: are animals truly guilty of a conspiracy and taking revenge for their slaughtered kin? No one listens to Janina, who believes this is nature's revenge. The intrigue thickens: where is the place of man if nature perhaps has other intentions?
The novel is staged and its stage version is created by the Syrian-born director from the Netherlands, Ola Mafaalani. Together with the talented Latvian artists whom she calls the "dream team" – set design debutant and currently world-renowned Latvian designer Germans Ermičs, internationally acclaimed composer Krists Auznieks, talented choreographer Elīna Gediņa, and the exceptional costume designer duo Mareunrol's – Mafaalani will offer viewers a visually grand poetry previously unseen in Latvian theatres. It will interweave with humor, ideas that awaken the mind and soul, food aromas, and unexpected stage magic.
Performance in Latvian with English subtitles in the titles.
