In cooperation with the Health Centre “Vivendi”, we invite single-parent families to participate in a free online lecture series “Small Team, Great Power”.
In the lecture series, five sessions will examine topics related to child development, parent well-being, mutual relationships, conflict resolution, boundaries, as well as career and financial decisions. It is possible to register both for individual lectures and for the full series of five lectures.
The sessions will be led by clinical and health psychologist Kristiāna Kalniņa:
“In my work, I often meet parents who are raising children alone or separated from the other parent. Such everyday life means twice as much work, responsibility and sometimes also more energy depletion, anxiety and responsibility for parents. This lecture series was created with the aim of supporting parents so that they are not only able to provide safety and stability for the child, but also preserve their own strength, health and balance.”
30 September at 18.30-19.45 | “Child Development in a Single-Parent Family”
The lecture will provide knowledge about the peculiarities of child development when growing up in a single-parent family and the importance of the parent's role in child development. It will examine how to support a child's emotional, social and cognitive development at different age stages, as well as the situation of single-parent families in Latvia and the world.
Participants will learn about possible risk factors, including loneliness, parental overload and unclear boundaries, as well as protective factors – a stable routine, secure attachment and an accessible support network.
7 October at 18.30-19.45 | “Conflicts and Cooperation”
The lecture will offer the opportunity to acquire practical skills for constructive conflict resolution and building healthy cooperation with the child and the other parent.
It will explain why conflicts arise and intensify, how to distinguish conflict from emotional violence, use “I-messages”, active listening and boundary setting, as well as build cooperation with the other parent while keeping the child's interests at the centre.
21 October at 18.30-19.45 | “Parent Well-Being and Health”
The lecture will be devoted to the parent's mental and physical health. It will discuss overload, feelings of guilt and isolation, signs of stress and burnout, as well as opportunities to take care of one's well-being in everyday life.
The importance of sleep, nutrition, physical activities and supportive people will be examined, as well as ways to create balance between the needs of the child and the parent.
28 October at 18.30–19.45 | “Safe and Respectful Relationships and Boundaries”
The lecture will examine the importance of relationship quality in shaping a child's ideas about mutual relationships, as well as emotional, physical and digital boundaries between parent and child.
It will also discuss forming new relationships after separation and their possible impact on the child. Participants will learn how to recognise the signs of a dependent relationship and help the child learn respectful communication.
11 November at 18.30-19.45 | “Psychological Safety, Career Choices and Financial Decisions”
The lecture will help to better understand the psychological factors that influence attitudes towards money, work, career and stability.
It will discuss the influence of early experiences and family beliefs on financial decisions, fear of scarcity, feelings of guilt and the impact of stress on decision-making. It will also examine the importance of self-esteem and professional identity, perfectionism and fear of mistakes, maintaining motivation in the long term, the parent's role in shaping the child's attitude towards money and responsibility, as well as strengthening psychological resilience.
