Miķeļdiena Brīvdabas muzejā

Over the course of the year, Miķeļi marks the autumn equinox, when day and night are once again equal in length. Miķeļi is an autumn seasonal festival and a celebration marking the passing of the fertile part of the year. In records of folk traditions, alongside Miķeļi, the concept of Apjumības is also found, as grain harvesting concludes on this day. Jumis is the spirit of fertility that dwells in every grain field, and in the lives of farmers it was of great significance, which is why many rituals and practices are associated with it. The most characteristic ritual of this holiday is catching the Jumis, through which farmers sought to ensure the fertility of the fields in the coming years.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the Miķeļi autumn harvest festival, explore the rich market, experience ancient harvest rituals, taste a hearty autumn soup, and participate in activities for the whole family.

The Miķeļu tirgus is one of the year's most colorful and bountiful events, bringing together Latvian artisans and food producers, offering various works by local craftsmen and seasonal treats. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase baskets, knitwear, jewelry, ceramics, wood and textile products, as well as local food – freshly baked bread, cheeses, smoked meats, confectionery products, honey, and the autumn harvest.
