Medieval alchemists considered the rose to be a symbol of transformation and perfection. The red rose symbolized life, blood, passion, and matter, while the white rose symbolized purity, spirit, and immortality. In medieval churches, rose symbols were carved above confessionals to remind of the sanctity of the secret of confession.
