Rīgas iela 216B, Jēkabpils
On August 24, 2026, at 16.00, a pastel exhibition by Dainis Bērziņš entitled „Zūdošo laiku paturot” will be opened at Krustpils Castle.
Dainis Bērziņš was born in 1955 in Liepāja, graduated from Liepāja 8-year School No. 10 and Liepāja Secondary School No. 1. Afterwards, he obtained an architect's diploma from the Riga Polytechnic Institute, holds a Master's degree in Architecture, works as an architect and co-owner at the architectural bureau SIA „Arhitektu birojs Vecumnieks&Bērziņi”, and has long managed the sketching evening studio and architectural design classes for prospective architecture students at Riga Technical University. Alongside his work in architecture, in the field of art he creates landscapes by painting exclusively in nature – en plein air, more rarely still lifes, nudes, and portraits in pastel and other dry techniques. Dainis Bērziņš's works have so far been featured in 16 solo exhibitions and 56 group exhibitions or duo exhibitions in Latvia, Lithuania, and Germany. Pastels in the landscape and still life genres are reproduced in Dainis Bērziņš's book „Pasteļi un haikas”, which also features three-line poems composed for the specific landscape in the tradition of classical Japanese haiku, observing the canonical syllable count for each of the three lines of text.
The exhibition „Zūdošo laiku paturot” features still lifes and landscapes painted both over the past year and previously. They do not depict a natural object so much as show the feelings of that moment – in different seasons and various weather conditions, thus stopping, fixing, and „conserving” the unstoppable flow of time. Pastel gives the author the opportunity to retain fleeting time – to preserve an imprint in memory formed by the complex of all sensations experienced while painting the work. Therefore, the title of the exhibition is a paraphrase of the title of the famous novel by Marcel Proust, „In Search of Lost Time” („Zudušo laiku meklējot”).
The exhibition at Krustpils Castle can be viewed until November 1 of this year.
