From 14 to 30 September, the Children's Service Department of Smiltene Library hosts the book exhibition "Travel the World of Languages!", featuring a book collection from the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation about the world-famous story "The Little Prince".

The exhibition has been created within the framework of the European Day of Languages in cooperation with EUROPE DIRECT Austrumvidzeme, inviting visitors to discover the diversity of European languages and to find out how differently the same literary story can sound in different languages.

The exhibition "Travel the World of Languages!" began its journey through Latvian cities in the spring of 2023. Each year it offers ever-new collections of children's books, allowing readers to discover beloved literary characters in various European languages. So far, in various Latvian cities it has been possible to view books about Pippi Longstocking, Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio and other beloved book characters.

Now the collection dedicated to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's famous work "The Little Prince" has arrived in Smiltene. It is one of the most translated literary works in the world – the story has been published in more than 600 languages and dialects. At the exhibition it is possible to view a part of this linguistic diversity and notice how the same book acquires a different sound in different languages.

The European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation creates such book collections to stimulate interest in European languages, the cultures of different countries and the importance of translation. The collections travel and are used in events related to the European Day of Languages in various European countries.

The European Day of Languages has been marked annually on 26 September since 2001. It reminds us of Europe's rich linguistic and cultural diversity and encourages lifelong language learning – because every new language allows you to see both Europe and the world a little differently.

We invite everyone interested – children and young people as well as adults – to visit the Children's Service Department of Smiltene Library, Gaujas iela 1, and set off on a fascinating journey through the world of European languages together with the Little Prince!
